The Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council was established on January 1, 2010. The purpose of the establishment of MPHTJ is to develop the entire Hang Tuah Jaya area as an integrated ICT and Multimedia center as a life support, as well as to plan and develop a comfortable and complete residential zone with social infrastructure and meet all principles of Sustainable City development.

Hang Tuah Jaya is a satellite town for Melaka City which is also the new administrative center of the state of Melaka starting in June 2006. This town is also called the 'Putrajaya' of Melaka. The administrative center of Hang Tuah Jaya is located about 15 km from Melaka city center.
